Not gonna lie, this is dangerous territory for us. My subconscious is a tripping hazard.
A GOOD DAY TO YOU! It's a happy little Wednesday, today. [insert Bob Ross reference here]
I keep getting asked three questions about writing. So, I thought I would toss this little tidbit out into the universe and let it do it's thing.
- What's some good advice that you can give an aspiring writer?
- Any tips on how I can keep myself motivated to write?
- What do you do if you write yourself into a corner and get stuck with your story?
1) Can you be more specific? Just kidding. The biggest answer to this question is don't write it for other people. Write it for yourself. You can't please everyone. There will always be someone who won't like what you write - and, in some cases insult you and your writing.
Write the story you want to read. Don't make it for someone else.
2) Nike. Just do it. Sit your butt down and do it. It's not about motivation. It's about discipline. Because the moment you get into the zone, you're going to be motivated to keep it going.
Make notes on where you are, and where you are headed with it. So, that when you do come to a stopping point or you have to stop for whatever reason (i.e. sleep, lol - like that's an actual option). This way, you have the ability to pick up where you left off. Because, it would suck just to get that far and have to start over because you couldn't remember where you were headed....... not like I've done that a hundred times, or anything.
3) Step away for a bit. Take a moment. Come back to it with fresh eyes. If that doesn't work, re-evaluate where you are at - in relation to where you know you need to be. Does it need to be there? Can this part of the story be a situation that can be over come? Is there another path that could have been taken to get to that point.
Sometimes, and it sucks to say it, you need to go back and decide whether or not that part is something that needs to be in place - or if it is something you can shuffle around and have later in the story? It may require some re-work, or re-writing of some items. But, isn't that what you do (creative writing)?
If it comes down to it, maybe phone a friend. Ask them for some advice. Keep in mind that if you're writing a murder mystery - don't actually phone a friend and ask, "how do you dispose of a body?"
That would be awkward. There might be crying, police, and forensics all over your house.
Ask them to read what you have. Ask them what they think of the situation? What would they do if they were in that situation?
Special Note: Don't just write a story so you can ask your friends how to dispose of a body. Again. Awkward. Bad.
