Zombie Nation: Epilogue:
November 18th, 2009 10:23 PM
I found this old journal of mine in a box marked memories. It’d been a while since I’d updated it. I figured, why not?
It’s been three years since that day. I don’t think we ever fully got over it, but we did move on. After all was said and done, the troubles, the hardships, and the zombies, I think we did a rather magnificent job at recouping.
We’d moved to a bit larger of a house out in the backwoods of the state. I found some prime farmland that was no longer being used, due to the zombie outbreak. The new property is rather large; 60 plus acres. In the middle of the land was a small plot of wooded area, where I built my house. On either side of the woods was nothing but a field.
We chose this land, to be away from the populous, just in case of another outbreak. (The farther away from the people, the farther we are from… well, people.)
Most of the zombie epidemic was contained, a little left of Minnesota. They caught it before it could spread farther across the country; to the left coast. (Yeah, I said “left” coast, so what?) There were still a few stragglers that were pushed into Canada, and both governments assured the public that the zombie regime was contained, however every once and a while, there are still reports of an attack or two.
As it turned out, this whole situation began in a medical facility. (A big surprise, I know.)
A biomedical science team headed up by a Doctor Leibowizc and under the direction of the our government - in cooperation with a couple others, was trying to find a way to cheat death, by creating a serum that could literally turn back the clock on life - theoretically. The scope of the operation was to prolong life and make people immune to diseases and eventually, death.
When the men and women test subjects, were injected, there was some unforeseen side effect that certain individuals would go through. Not only did it make them brain dead - it kept the body going well after. That was probably what caused their problems, right there - one would surmise.
Essentially, they got so doped up that they didn’t know what was going on. Only the bare essential life functions were present; breathe, eat, sleep, and hunt.
The only side effect was that they learned to adapt and survived on their hunts, by eating what they hunted. (Kind of like the olden days, I guess. I wasn’t there, I don’t know)
Apparently, it quickly got out of hand shortly after they were human trials. Many of the test subjects turned on their own, in order to survive. The government thought that they had it contained and started a new study on the remaining test subjects, only to find out that they only prolonged the inevitable.
Their facility near Virginia went on lockdown. I didn’t know this, but apparently zombies can “LIVE”, for lack of a better term, under water - as I’d visualized earlier. (And so did you. Admit it.)
So, enough about the history, at this point, I thought I’d just fill you in on what we all found out, after the fact.
Tonight is our annual Thanksgiving with Jim, his girlfriend, My wife, and my daughter. It’s been a tradition since well before the zombie thing. It was one way of splitting the holiday up between families.
We joke about the past from time to time, but we all remember how we spent that day; in fear.
It was time to celebrate and truly give thanks. Now, there was no need to fear. I mean, it’s not like they were coming back anytime soon, right?
